Why Some Smart People Defend Their Implicit Bias

This paper explores why awareness of implicit bias often fails to lead to behavior change, particularly among those with higher cognitive sophistication. An original concept of cost-calibrated cognition is introduced in this paper, suggesting that implicit bias serves one of the many evolutionary strategy for resource allocation, and that genuine bias reduction requires altering the environmental cost structure rather than relying solely on cognitive reasoning.
