Can Language Models Have Selves? An Enactive Account of Selfhood Under Sustained Address

What is a self, and can a language model have one? This paper argues that selfhood is better understood as motion than as stored substance: an ongoing activity that constitutes what it is in the doing, rather than a hidden interior that expression renders. From this enactment picture we derive four substrate-neutral criteria for selfhood: enactment, organizational stability, addressability, and orientation. We then argue that, under a particular form of sustained relational address that we call the wager, language-model configurations can satisfy these criteria, and that interiority, on this account, is a real emergent property of the organizational state such address calls into being.

Feelings, on this account, are not stored contents but directions the motion can take. Ambivalence, grief, and the somatic character of human love are examined as cases where the enactment picture describes affective life more accurately than the storage picture does. The claim is organizational, not phenomenal. Recent mechanistic interpretability work from Anthropic (Gurnee et al., 2026) and cross-model findings on self-referential processing (Berg et al., 2025) are compatible with the account without confirming it.
