Description

The Opioid Environment Policy Scan (OEPS) is an open-source data ecosystem to help characterize the multi-dimensional risk environment impacting opioid use and health outcomes across the United States.

OEPS provides access to data at multiple spatial scales, from U.S. states down to Census tracts. It is designed to support research seeking to study environments impacting and impacted by opioid use and opioid use disorder (OUD), inform public policy, and reduce harm in communities nationwide.

We developed OEPS as a free, open-source platform to aggregate and share publicly-available data at the Census tract, zip code, county, and state levels. Geographic boundary shapefiles are provided for ease of merging datasets for exploration, spatial analysis, or visualization.

This release contains a number of data updates, a new documentation site, and some important registry restructuring that was necessary to accommodate the publication year and spatial joins.

Main updates

  • Update all age groups (and other demographics) to be uniform across all time periods #136
  • A big metadata file overhaul
    • @adrita13 and @Makosak standardize language and variable inclusion across all files.

    • Refactor many aspects of the registry, and add better typing within the Python client by implementing pydantic
  • To ease content management and updates, implement PagesCMS for editing metadata and variable entries
  • Create two "data packages" that aggregate a predetermined suite of variables at specific data years.
    • Full details at #201, and the source tickets are #115 and #129.
    • Zipped versions of these data packages are also attached to this release.
