The dissolution of traditional network perimeters has accelerated the adoption of Zero Trust Architecture across modern enterprises. As organizations expand cloud usage, support hybrid work models, and manage heterogeneous endpoints, legacy trust‑based security approaches have become insufficient. This paper presents a comprehensive examination of ZTA implementation practices, synthesizing guidance from NIST SP 1800‑35 and analyzing production‑grade architectures deployed at scale. We describe a proxy‑centric enforcement model incorporating mutual TLS (mTLS), centralized policy evaluation, and identity assertion propagation. Case studies from the banking and healthcare sectors illustrate how ZTA enables operational resilience and supports business growth. We further discuss persistent challenges—including scalability, orchestration complexity, and regulatory alignment—and evaluate emerging trends such as AI‑driven policy automation and adaptations for IoT ecosystems. Our findings indicate that identity‑centric controls and automated trust evaluation mechanisms are critical for advancing Zero Trust maturity.
