Dimethyltryptamine and the Recursive Reorganization of Consciousness
Description
This paper develops a multilevel causal architecture for understanding how N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) reorganizes conscious experience across an unusually compressed timescale. It integrates evidence from pharmacokinetics, receptor signaling, cellular gain modulation, whole-brain dynamics, embodied physiology, phenomenology, memory, environmental conditions, repeated exposure, recovery, and post-session updating. Rather than treating DMT solely as a source of altered perceptual contents, the paper examines it as a perturbational probe of how a living brain–body–environment system constructs a self, stabilizes an experienced world, attributes agency and reality, and reorganizes toward waking life.
The paper is presented as a Tier-2 special-case domain synthesis within the Generative Collapse Dynamics–Universal Mathematics and Collapse Platform (GCD–UMCP) corpus. Its central formal contribution is a prospective dual-reference architecture that distinguishes departure from ordinary waking organization from approach toward a candidate recurrent DMT-state organization. Independently constructed waking and altered-state reference structures, frozen embeddings, bounded reference-fit scores, and an altered-over-waking dominance margin are used to define “breakthrough” provisionally as sustained altered-reference dominance rather than as a synonym for dose, intensity, neural complexity, visual effects, or ego dissolution.
The framework also models repeated sessions as path-dependent events, treats participant-reported “lockout” as a typed outcome requiring pharmacological and phenomenological qualification, and distinguishes local recovery from canonical waking return and stronger continuity claims. Worldhood, perceived agency, hyperreality, embodiment, grounding, recurrence failure, and asynchronous recovery are treated as separable but interacting constructs.
Throughout, the manuscript distinguishes controlled evidence, convergent human findings, structured phenomenology, computational inference, theoretical modeling, novel hypotheses, and ontological claims. It remains agnostic regarding the mind-independent existence of perceived entities or environments and offers no preparation, dosing, administration, or legal-circumvention guidance. The proposed architecture is procedurally specified but empirically unvalidated; its scientific value depends on prospective testing, comparison with simpler models, preservation of negative results, and explicit contraction where its local predictions fail.
Methods (English)
This work is a structured integrative review, theoretical synthesis, and prospectively falsifiable model. It is not a registered systematic review, scoping review, meta-analysis, clinical trial, or report of new participant data.
Source selection was purposive and guided by causal relevance, methodological clarity, evidential strength, and direct relation to the proposed architecture. Controlled human pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, EEG, fMRI, simultaneous EEG–fMRI, physiological monitoring, structured phenomenology, validated scales, microphenomenology, and empirically constrained computational studies were prioritized. Literature coverage was updated through 30 July 2026.
Claims are typed using seven evidence classes: direct controlled evidence, convergent human evidence, structured phenomenology, constrained computational inference, GCD–UMCP model, novel hypothesis, and ontological claim.
The monograph reports no new statistical analysis of individual-level data. All new equations, latent constructs, reference structures, recurrence-failure types, recovery quantities, predictions, and study designs are theoretical or methodological proposals unless explicitly identified as previously validated measures.
