D7.4 Standardization and roadmap - Initial version

Description

This deliverable provides a report on the standardisation activities that have been undertaken by the PSS-Pass consortium during the first half of the project while detailed industrial requirements have been established, designs and methodologies specified, and early prototypes of the PSS-Pass project technologies have been developed. The report focuses on 1) describing the different types of standards, organisations and processes; 2) identifying the industry standards that have been selected and used in the development of the PSS-Pass technologies; and 3) identifying gaps in existing industry standards that if addressed, would accelerate the take-up of project technologies, amplify the expected impact of the project and increase the use of Digital Product Services Passport technologies within manufacturing industries while at the same time, providing greater confidence in the project technologies and their evolution.

The project has adopted a wide variety of recognised industry standards during the design and development of the early PSS-Pass prototype technologies. The standards adopted range from formal de jure standards from international standards bodies such as ISO, W3C, IDTA and others, as well as de facto standards from groupings such as Apache, and others representing well-established communities supporting the evolution of widely adopted open source technologies. The project has identified standardisation gaps in four key areas, some of which are needed extensions to existing standards, while others are new standards that are needed to enable Product Service Systems to be exploited in conjunction with the introduction of Digital Product Passports in Europe.

This deliverable is the first of two reports providing an initial assessment and gap analysis. This earlier report prepared during first industrial evaluations of the prototype technologies will be followed by a second report due at the end of the project after the final prototypes have been completed and industrial partners have validated the new project technologies, which will include a Roadmap for closing the identified standardisation gaps.
