Description
Trichogramma atopovirilia (Oatman & Platner, 1983)
Notes.
This species was not collected in our survey.
Distribution.
The species is widely distributed in Meso- and South America ranging from Texas and Mexico to Brazil. The species also occurs in the Caribbean subregion (Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico).
Biology.
Like all other Trichogramma species, T. atopovirilia parasitizes eggs of Lepidoptera. Females insert their ovipositor through the eggshell to lay one egg inside. The developing larva consumes the contents of the host egg, killing the embryo. The full life cycle, from egg to adult, is rapid and can be completed in 7–10 days under optimal conditions (Melo et al. 2007).
Hosts.
This species has been recorded from ~ 20 species of Lepidoptera (UCD Community 2023), some of economic importance (Zucchi et al. 2010). It was reared from eggs of D. hyalinata in Brazil (Polanczyk et al. 2009). This species has been reared for biological control of Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith, 1797) (Noctuidae).
