Description
Abstract : Hair and scalp syndromes such for example scalp flakes, seborrheic dermatitis,
folliculitis and Ringworm capitis are commonly associated with fungal and microbial
infections of the scalp. These conditions are primarily caused by microorganisms such as
Malassezia species, Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Cutibacterium acnes. The
scalp provides a favourable environment for microbial growth owed to the occurrence of
sebaceous secretory organ, moisture besides hair follicles. Conventional treatments include
synthetic antifungal and antimicrobial agents such as Ketoconazole and Climbazole, which
are widely used in shampoos and topical formulations. These treatments may cause side
effects, limited contact time and recurrence of infection. So, there is a growing interest in
alternative delivery systems such as hair serums that provide prolonged contact with the scalp
and improved drug penetration. Hair serum formulations offer advantages such as better
spreadability, targeted follicular delivery and enhanced patient compliance. The incorporation
of usual constituents such as crucial oils and herbal extracts with antimicrobial properties
further improves therapeutic efficacy. Proper selection of active ingredients, excipients, and
formulation strategies is crucial to confirm stability, care and effectiveness. Assessment of the
formulated serum includes physicochemical characterization, in-vitro antifungal and
antimicrobial testing, skin irritation studies and stability assessment according to regulatory
guidelines. Accordingly, antifungal hair serums represent a promising approach for the
effective management of microbial scalp disorders.
