Water-Activated Paper-Based Ash Containment Systems: A Technical Framework for Extinguishment Validation, Residue Control and Hospitality Deployment
Authors/Creators
Description
Cigarette-butt and ash management presents a recurring operational challenge in hospitality, tourism, events and other high-traffic environments. Conventional reusable ashtrays require collection, emptying, cleaning, storage and redistribution, while insufficiently controlled smoking waste may contribute to residue dispersion, odour, visual pollution and fire-related risk.
This technical report presents the development and functional-validation framework of the Ekoroll Disposable Paper Ashtray, a water-activated, fibre-dominant ash-containment system intended for controlled use in designated smoking areas. The final product configuration combines a 210 gsm paperboard body, a 12 gsm polyethylene moisture-resistant layer and a water-absorbent polymer core. The product has a nominal width of 90 mm and a unit weight of 4.9 ±0.1 g.
During iterative product development, more than 250 units were functionally evaluated across successive refinements of the container structure, absorbent-core behaviour, water activation, cigarette-butt extinguishment, residue containment and practical handling. Internal development testing established approximately 50 ml of water as the principal activation reference and demonstrated the extinguishment and containment of up to 15 cigarette butts in the final product configuration.
The report distinguishes developer-generated development history from controlled confirmation evidence and independent third-party certification. It introduces a repeatable validation framework covering hydration, extinguishment, re-ignition, sequential loading, leakage, thermal behaviour, structural integrity, service-age performance and hospitality deployment.
The product is accurately described as paper-based and fibre-dominant rather than plastic-free, compostable or conventionally recyclable. The report also defines material, safety, environmental-claim and intellectual-property boundaries. It does not promote tobacco consumption and is concerned exclusively with the management of cigarette-related waste where smoking already occurs.
