Operational Psyche: Toward Development and Relational Causality in Human–AI Systems

Description
Abstract
Operational psyche describes how a bounded system persists, models, values, acts, relates, and develops without treating those functions as proof of an inner subject. It is a comparative profile rather than a substance, rank, personhood criterion, or score. Mind-like means only that a selected system shows relevant organization under a declared boundary and timescale; it does not assign consciousness. The central developmental construct, the operational developmental envelope, is the largest presently evidence-supported range of viable organizations and transitions reachable within a stated horizon, given embodiment, history, relationship, material conditions, opportunity, and choice. Human–artificial intelligence (AI) systems place that foundation beside two narrower questions. Relational observability asks whether instrumentable machine-internal computational states add valid, out-of-sample information about a specified human or relational variable beyond the full interaction record. The more speculative induced epistemic correspondence asks what evidence would be required before a donor-derived intervention could be said to induce correspondence in another person’s content, attitude, confidence, and justificatory organization. Decoding, synchrony, relational prediction, and causal influence occupy different evidentiary levels; none establishes identical experience, identity transfer, shared subjectivity, or direct access to another mind. Developmental agents are considered as candidate causal catalysts whose success would appear as portable capability, mature self-direction, realistic healthy pride, and fading dependence—not engagement or compliance. The framework ends where its measures end: what is measured and what is happening are related, often causally, but are not the same.
