Indigenous Technology Transfer and Economic Diversification in Nigeria: A Historical Analysis

ABSTRACT: Nigeria's prolonged dependence on crude oil has exposed its economy to external shocks, declining industrial productivity, unemployment, and limited technological advancement, highlighting the need for economic diversification. This study examines the historical relationship between indigenous technology transfer and economic diversification in Nigeria, emphasizing the contributions of indigenous knowledge systems, artisanal skills, traditional production techniques, and intergenerational knowledge transmission from the pre-colonial period to the present. The study adopts the historical research method, relying on primary and secondary sources, including archival records, government publications, scholarly literature, and oral traditions. Findings reveal that indigenous technology transfer enhanced local production, entrepreneurship, employment generation, and rural industrialization, strengthening local economies before colonial disruptions and offering opportunities for contemporary development. However, colonial economic policies, inadequate investment in research and development, weak institutional support, poor commercialization of indigenous innovations, and reliance on imported technologies have constrained its integration into national development. The study concludes that revitalizing indigenous technology transfer through supportive policies, innovation ecosystems, intellectual property protection, and stronger collaboration among communities, research institutions, and industry can accelerate economic diversification, technological self-reliance, industrial competitiveness, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
