Description

Since the genre’s inception, mansions, houses, and dilapidated castles have been a key element in these narratives. These spaces serve as reminders of an unresolved and menacing past, as well as settings where the protagonists often find themselves trapped in cycles of violence.
This article analyzes the construction and reappropriation of the "Gothic house" motif in two recent Mexican novels: Restauración by Ave Barrera and La transmigración de los cuerpos by Yuri Herrera. Although fundamentally different in their approaches, both narratives provide settings in which living protagonists coexist with corpses and stories of domestic violence that resurface through the interactions the living establish with the dead and the spaces they inhabit.
