UAV-Assisted Edge-Cloud Orchestration for Agricultural IoT: An Information-Centric Networking Architecture for Infrastructure-Limited Environments
Authors/Creators
Description
The deployment of Internet of Things networks in remote agricultural and environmental monitoring scenarios is frequently paralyzed by severely limited infrastructure. In these challenging environments, sensor nodes suffer from intermittent terrestrial connectivity, rendering continuous cloud telemetry impossible. This paper proposes a highly resilient, cloud-native architectural framework utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as mobile edge-computing nodes integrated with Amazon Web Services. By deploying asynchronous Python middleware and Information-Centric Networking protocols, the proposed system enables agricultural sensor networks to cache telemetry locally until a coordinated UAV swarm passes overhead to harvest the data payload. The UAVs subsequently route the aggregated data to a serverless AWS API Gateway via intermittent satellite or high-altitude links. Preliminary architectural evaluations demonstrate that decoupling data generation from continuous cloud ingestion eliminates packet loss in disconnected environments, providing computer scientists and agronomists with a deterministic, scalable technological foundation for reliable IoT deployment in infrastructure-limited settings.
