Description

The need for standardization of BC metrics based on optical measurements is becoming more relevant with the recent revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directives proposed by the European Commission. The fact that most of the national air quality monitoring networks use optical instruments for measuring ambient black carbon mass concentrations, puts pressure on the metrology community to provide reference materials for different metrics like aerosol absorption coefficient and BC mass absorption cross-section. Recent developments in traceable in-situ techniques, like extinction-minus-scattering and photo-thermal interferometry, provide a way to establish primary reference methods for BC measurement. The stanBC project, aimed at providing method standardizing BC aerosol metrics, a stakeholder community survey was conducted to assess the opinion of different people involved in BC measurement on the needs towards standardization. There is special concern about the lack of standardized measurement techniques. Most of the participants are of the opinion that a dedicated WG for BC standardization within CEN TC 264 would be convenient.
