Edge-Cloud Orchestration for Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks: A Serverless Architecture for Autonomous Smart Farming
Description
The application of Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks in smart farming environments presents unique challenges related to node mobility, dynamic environmental demands, and network latency. Traditional cloud-only architectures struggle to process cyber-physical system data with the reflex speed required for instantaneous agricultural actuation, such as precision irrigation or automated pesticide deployment. This paper introduces a hybrid edge-cloud architectural framework utilizing Amazon Web Services and distributed edge nodes to optimize Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks. By deploying asynchronous Python middleware coupled with eXtreme Gradient Boosting algorithms, the proposed system processes critical sensor telemetry at the edge for immediate actuation, while asynchronously transmitting normalized data payloads to the cloud for longitudinal macroeconomic and agronomic analysis. Preliminary architectural evaluations demonstrate that this decoupled approach drastically reduces actuation latency and mitigates the impact of intermittent sensor-actuator failures, providing a highly resilient, deterministic framework for autonomous agricultural management.
