Record 3 — Planet NICFI Basemap Imagery (Aligned with the Oil Palm Label Grids)

Overview

This repository contains Planet NICFI Basemap image chips covering the same 6 × 6 km annotation grids as the Open Oil Palm Benchmark Dataset. Each image chip is spatially aligned with the corresponding reference labels and companion satellite imagery, enabling their combined use for oil palm mapping, land-cover classification, and GeoAI foundation model development.

This repository is published as a standalone companion record because Planet NICFI imagery is distributed under the Planet NICFI Satellite Data Program Participant License Agreement, which differs from the open-access licenses governing the Sentinel-2, Landsat 8/9, and AlphaEarth imagery provided in the companion satellite imagery record.

The imagery in this repository is distributed under the Planet NICFI Satellite Data Program Participant License Agreement. Please refer to LICENSE.txt for the complete license terms and redistribution requirements.

Planet NICFI imagery was accessed through Google Earth Engine using the following dataset:

Key license information includes:

• Access route: Planet NICFI Satellite Data Program via Google Earth Engine.
• Permitted use: Non-commercial use only, consistent with the Planet NICFI Participant License Agreement.

• Derivative products: Redistribution of derivative products must comply with the applicable license terms.

For the Zenodo deposition, the license should be specified as Other (Non-commercial). Users should consult both LICENSE.txt and NOTICE.txt before downloading, using, or redistributing the imagery.

The repository contains:

• Planet NICFI GeoTIFF image chips

Each GeoTIFF contains four spectral bands:

• Red
• Green
• Blue
• Near-Infrared (NIR)

with an approximate spatial resolution of 4.77 m.

Spatial Alignment

Each image chip represents the Planet NICFI composite corresponding to the annotation year assigned to its respective benchmark grid (2019–2025). All imagery has been reprojected to the native UTM coordinate reference system (CRS) of each grid to ensure precise spatial alignment with the benchmark reference labels and the companion satellite imagery.

All datasets can be linked using the common benchmark grid identifier (grid_XX).
