Description

This dataset has a hierarchical structure, with cone-level data nested within tree-level data, and tree-level data nested within site-level data. Consequently, tree- and site-level variables are duplicated across all rows corresponding to their respective cones and trees.

Each row corresponds to a cone sampled from an individual Pinus halepensis (id_ind). For each cone, the following traits were measured: maximum length and width; the number of scales along the vertical axis of the cone (scales); weight; time required to open in an oven at 65 °C (time); width of the cone after 45 minutes in the oven at 65 °C (width_2); number of full and empty seeds (f_seeds and e_seeds, respectively); weight of five full seeds; and the thickness and width of three central scales (scale_t and scale_w).

Tree-level variables include: sampling season (sampling); geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude; long and lat); diameter at breast height (dbh); distances to the two nearest trees (dist_1 and dist_2, in m); number of closed and open cones in the first mature cohort (coh_1c and coh_1a, respectively), second cohort (coh_2c and coh_2a), third and fourth cohorts (coh_3_4c and coh_3_4a), and fifth and sixth cohorts (coh_5_6c and coh_5_6a); and the number of predated green and grey cones (pred_green and pred_grey, respectively).

Site-level variables include: annual precipitation (bio_12); mean monthly precipitation during the wettest (bio_16), driest (bio_17), warmest (bio_18), and coldest (bio_19) quarters; mean monthly climate moisture index (cmi_mean); annual range in climate moisture index (cmi_range); and cumulative burned area over a 37-year period within a 10 km buffer around the sites (cba).
