Description

OMARO (Ontology for Multiperspectivity, Assertions, and Review in Organology) represents statements about musical instruments together with their sources, applicability, perspectives and review status. It is developed as part of the MODAVIS PhD project.

Version 0.1.0 includes the OWL ontology, validation schemas, a reference dataset derived from Musical Instrument Museums Online (MIMO), a vocabulary browser, research examples and Python tools for validation, export and querying. The reference dataset contains 643 Hornbostel–Sachs classifications, 2,724 resolved instrument concepts and five unresolved source references. Its 42,662 label assertions cover 13 languages; 643 note assertions preserve source definitions, and 1,872 qualified classification assertions retain the source mappings and their provenance.

The data support multilingual instrument lookup, examination of classification hierarchies and mappings, comparison of source statements, and development of evidence-based organological descriptions. JSONL, CSV, Turtle, JSON-LD, RDF/XML and SQLite distributions are included. The ontology, canonical schema, reference dataset and tooling all use version 0.1.0.

This is an independent derived snapshot, not an official MIMO release. Labels, notes and source-derived classification assertions have not received evidence-bearing human or community review. The 9,445 software-detected quality findings are review signals, not corrections or endorsements. Five unresolved references remain explicit. The source refresh covers the represented concept inventory and does not establish exhaustive coverage of all upstream concepts. The release contains vocabulary and assertion metadata, not museum-object assessments, images or audio.

Browse the reference dataset, consult the versioned ontology, or use the GitHub release and its documentation. The W3ID identifiers provide HTML, Turtle, JSON-LD and RDF/XML representations.

Methods (English)

The canonical records preserve MIMO concept identifiers, preferred and alternative labels, definitions, hierarchy and source mapping predicates. Source mappings are represented as qualified classification assertions with separate assignment activities, a recorded source perspective and source-silent applicability. Label and note assertions retain their source attribution and review status. IANA language-tag and Unicode character-script checks produce reproducible review signals without inferring cultural validity. Twenty-six compound source notations are tokenized without inferring component roles. Builds and exports use the preserved canonical snapshot offline; upstream refresh is a separate operation.

  • omaro-v0.1.0-source.zip: source code and tracked files for the initial 0.1.0 release.
  • omaro-v0.1.0.dcat.ttl: machine-readable distribution metadata.

Technical info (English)

Consumers require Python 3.11 or newer; the reproducible release build uses Python 3.13.13 and the supplied dependency lock file. The SQLite internal format remains 20200. The source archive identifies commit 8ae8bc74e920f466deefe92bc67598685f96deb5. The GitHub Pages site serves the verified published distribution. Historical ontology 2.2.0 documents are retained separately for existing MODAVIS reference snapshots; 0.1.0 is the current release version.

Notes (English)

The files reproduce the original GitHub release of 11 September 2026. References in the archived documentation and verification receipt to a reserved DOI, draft registration or pending publication describe that preparation stage. The current Zenodo record gives the publication metadata. Source statements and unresolved cases are retained as evidence; institutional affiliations do not imply institutional endorsement.
