Description
Abstract (English)
We conducted bird observations in the Kasli district of the Chelyabinsk region and adjacent areas in May and June 2022. Analysis of the obtained data and published scientific literature on the abundance and distribution of several species allowed us to draw conclusions about their status dynamics in some cases. For example, the presented data indicate a significant decline in the numbers of Greylag Goose Anser anser and Great Snipe Gallinago media, while other species such as Mute Swan Cygnus olor, Whooper Swan C. cygnus, Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina, Arctic Loon Gavia arctica, Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo, Great Egret Casmerodius albus, Black Kite Milvus migrans, White-tailed Sea-eagle Haliaeetus albicilla, Great Black-headed Gull Larus ichthyaetus, Little Owlet Athene noctua, Common Blackbird Turdus merula, Lanceolated Warbler Locustella lanceolata, and Long-tailed Rosefinch Uragus sibiricus demonstrated an increase in their numbers and/or distribution over the recent decades. The increase in the numbers of fish-eating species (Arctic Loon, Black Kite, and Whitetailed Eagle) is apparently due to abundant food supply. Among the species showing rapid shifts in their breeding range boundaries, only Lanceolated Warbler and Long-tailed Rosefinch are expanding their distribution ranges westward. Most of the remaining species belong to the tropical, nomadic, or European bird groups and are expanding their distribution ranges north and east, which is apparently caused by the ongoing global warming. Moreover, in the paper we report new data on the recent nesting of Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca, Osprey Pandion haliaetus, and Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus, which were considered not breeding in the region. For the first time since the second half of the 19th century, Common Scoter Melanitta nigra was observed migrating through the Chelyabinsk region.
