Every living species has its own habitat and surroundings in which it survives and completes their entire life-span. Living organisms may be either aquatic or terrestrial. Among terrestrial species, some animal and plants species, successfully adapted in desert habitat for their survival. Desert ecosystems represent one of the harshest and most challenging environments for life on Earth, characterized by high temperatures, water scarcity, limited food resources (plants and animals), low rainfall, and significant daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations (extremely hot days and cold nights). Despite these difficult conditions, a diverse array of animals and plants have evolved unique physiological and morphological adaptations to suit the desert environment, enabling them to survive and thrive. These adaptations primarily include water conservation mechanisms, temperature regulation strategies, efficient energy utilization, reproductive strategies, and specific physical structures and features that help conserve energy and reduce heat gain. Furthermore, behavioral and structural strategies such as nocturnal activity and burrowing further enhance the chances of survival in desert environments. The species (animals and plants) that inhabit deserts face numerous significant challenges compared to other living organisms. To survive in such a harsh environment, desert species exhibit a variety of physiological adaptations that help them cope with these conditions and sustain life. This research review explores the knowledge regarding desert-dwelling species (particularly animals) and examines specific examples across different animal groups, highlighting the role of natural selection in shaping these remarkable survival strategies. The adaptive mechanisms, both physiological and morphological, that animals in desert regions utilize to cope with water scarcity, extreme heat, and limited food availability are also discussed in this study.
