The directory contains:

• code: code to replicate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculations for tourism in Germany using three different approaches.

  • BU-survey:

    • firm-level: code to calculate energy use and Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions for individual tourism companies based on survey data collected with SoSci, compatible with the national GHG inventory and the Bundes-Klimaschutzgesetz
    • destination-level: code to calculate GHG emissions for tourism destinations based on the firm-level data created in using the code in firm-level

  • TD-consumption: code to calculate GHG footprints for tourism consumption in Germany using environmentally-extended multi-regional input-output (EE-MRIO) models, such as ICIO and EXIOBASE

  • TD-production: code to calculate Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions for tourism industries in Germany based on national emission data and statistics, compatible with the national GHG inventory and the Bundes-Klimaschutzgesetz

• data: data files created internally for the analysis

• codebook: Excel file containing to codebook for the firm-level survey

How to run

This research compendium has been developed using the statistical programming language R. To work with the compendium, you will need installed on your computer the R software itself and optionally RStudio Desktop.

The code presented in this directory serves mainly to explore the methodology presented in the Methodenhandbuch (DOI: 10.48485/pik.2026.24). As the analysis requires multiple data sources not included in this directory, it would be necessary to download (publically available) and request (not publically available) data sets used in the code to replicate the analysis. Data sources used are described in the handbook and source code. Firm level data to run the bu-code has been collected in a survey. This data is not available.
