Description

How can research teams turn ambitious ideas about societal impact into a shared and actionable path for change? This guide shows how co-creative Theory of Change processes can help diverse research partners build a common vision, uncover hidden assumptions, and connect everyday project activities with meaningful long-term outcomes.

Drawing on the practical experience of the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center, it offers three adaptable approaches – from introducing impact-oriented thinking to developing and implementing a fully coherent Theory of Change. It is supported by workshop exercises, facilitation guidance, reflection formats, and a real-world case study.

Particular attention is given to inclusive participation, power dynamics, conflicting perspectives, and the challenge of translating complex discussions into realistic pathways to impact. Rather than presenting a Theory of Change as a static planning exercise, the guide frames it as a living tool for collaboration, strategic decision-making, learning, communication, and ultimately, more socially responsive research.
