Environmental Structure and the Semiosis of Mortality: Life, Consciousness, and the Emergence of Self-Reference

Life emerges as an active process within structured environments, sustaining itself by selectively engaging with the constraints and opportunities those environments provide. This engagement relies on referential functions through which organisms internally model relevant aspects of their surroundings. As these functions become more complex, living systems begin to represent not only environmental conditions but also their own actions and internal states. This transition marks the emergence of consciousness as a reflexive mode of self-related environmental interpretation. When referential function extends further to include the organism’s own limits—its vulnerability, contingency, and eventual cessation—mortality awareness arises as the limit case of self-reference. In this framework, life, consciousness, and mortality awareness form successive stages in the development of referential function grounded in environmental structure. The result is an internally dominant mode of regulation in which action is shaped not only by external constraints but also by self-understanding and recognition of finitude. This paper proposes a conceptual model linking environmental structure, active function, reflexive semiosis, and mortality, offering a unified perspective on the internal organization of living systems and its role within ecological and planetary dynamics
