Agentic Commerce Architecture: A Foundational Research Model for AI Commerce, presents a conceptual framework explaining how artificial intelligence fundamentally changes digital commerce by shifting the primary buyer from a human navigating websites to an AI agent capable of discovering, evaluating, and transacting on behalf of the customer.
The paper argues that the long-observed plateau in global e-commerce penetration is primarily a consequence of interface fluency rather than limited consumer demand. Traditional digital commerce requires buyers to possess language proficiency, navigation skills, digital trust, and the ability to manage complex purchasing journeys. This research proposes that AI removes these constraints by allowing commerce to adapt to human intent instead of requiring humans to adapt to digital interfaces.
To explain this structural transition, the paper introduces four original conceptual contributions:
- Fluency Ceiling – the hypothesis that e-commerce adoption is constrained by the population capable of comfortably interacting with digital interfaces.
- Demand-Unlock Hypothesis – the proposition that AI expands the total addressable digital commerce market by enabling previously excluded consumers to participate.
- Mediation Curve – a model describing the transition from human-directed commerce to AI-mediated commerce across discovery, comparison, and purchasing.
- Agentic Commerce Architecture (ACA) – a proposed business architecture discipline focused on designing enterprises as machine-legible, verifiable, queryable, and agent-selectable systems.
Unlike prevailing industry forecasts that primarily model AI as an efficiency layer improving existing conversion rates, this framework positions AI as a structural driver capable of increasing overall e-commerce penetration by removing language and cognitive barriers that historically limited adoption.
The paper also proposes:
- a transparent layered projection model for AI commerce between 2026 and 2032,
- ten falsifiable market markers intended for future validation,
- an operational framework for preparing enterprises for autonomous AI buyers,
- and a research agenda for empirical investigation of AI-mediated commerce.
This publication is released as Version 1.0 of a foundational conceptual framework. It is intended to support academic discussion, industry research, empirical validation, and future work in artificial intelligence, electronic commerce, digital business architecture, autonomous agents, information systems, and machine-mediated markets.
