"Transforming Surgical Nursing: From Postoperative Care to Comprehensive Perioperative Care"
Authors/Creators
Description
Abstract: Surgical nursing has undergone remarkable transformation over the past few decades, evolving from a discipline primarily focused on postoperative recovery to a comprehensive specialty encompassing the entire perioperative continuum. Contemporary surgical nurses play pivotal roles before, during, and after surgery by integrating evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, technological innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and quality improvement initiatives. The transition toward comprehensive perioperative care has significantly improved patient safety, reduced surgical complications, shortened hospital stays, enhanced patient satisfaction, and optimized healthcare resource utilization. Modern perioperative nursing extends beyond technical competence, emphasizing holistic assessment, psychological support, risk stratification, infection prevention, pain management, enhanced recovery protocols, patient education, and continuity of care across healthcare settings. Emerging technologies, including robotic surgery, artificial intelligence, electronic health records, simulation-based education, telehealth, and digital monitoring systems, have further expanded the responsibilities and competencies required of surgical nurses. Simultaneously, challenges such as increasing surgical complexity, aging populations, workforce shortages, antimicrobial resistance, and healthcare-associated infections necessitate continuous professional development and evidence-based nursing interventions. This review examines the evolution of surgical nursing, explores the expanding scope of perioperative nursing practice, discusses current evidence supporting comprehensive perioperative care, highlights technological innovations and enhanced recovery strategies, and outlines future directions for advancing surgical nursing practice. Strengthening perioperative nursing through education, research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered approaches remains fundamental for improving surgical outcomes and promoting safer healthcare systems worldwide.
