Finding hidden long-period planets with TESS

Description

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered a wealth of transiting exoplanets around nearby bright stars.However, ~95% of discoveries to date are short period planets with P<25 days. We perform new realistic simulations on the TESS-SPOC data using the TIaRA code, finding up to ~700 exoplanets with periods over 25 days may remain undiscovered. >75% of these will have unsolved periods, coming from either a single transit or two or more transits separated by ~2 yearsbetween TESS visits. The peak in the period distribution of these discoveries also shifts from 25-50d after year 2 to 100-200d after year 5.
