National Agricultural Information Retention Library

This white paper proposes the establishment of a National Agricultural Information Retention Library to preserve Australia's agricultural knowledge before it is lost through the ongoing transition from physical to digital information systems.

Australia possesses a substantial body of agricultural information distributed across Commonwealth, State and Local Government agencies, universities, research organisations, industry groups, historical societies, libraries, private collections, farming enterprises and individual researchers. Much of this material exists only in printed reports, technical manuals, field notebooks, unpublished datasets, maps, photographs, extension publications and locally produced documents that are increasingly at risk of deterioration, disposal or becoming inaccessible.

The paper argues that historical agricultural information represents a strategic national asset rather than simply archival material. It proposes a coordinated national framework to identify, acquire, preserve, catalogue and digitise these collections while maintaining provenance, metadata and lawful access arrangements.

The proposed library would function as a long-term preservation and research infrastructure supporting agricultural science, environmental management, food security, climate adaptation, water management, engineering, artificial intelligence and future innovation. The objective is to ensure that historical agricultural knowledge remains available to researchers, policymakers and future generations rather than being permanently lost through institutional change or technological obsolescence.
