Moving Beyond the Binary: A Case for Replacing the Complementarian-Egalitarian Classifications with a Four-Quadrant Framework

Complementarianism and egalitarianism have long served as the standard classifications for evangelical views on the redeemed relationship between men and women. Yet, what if the problem is no longer the biblical debate itself, but the structure through which it is framed? This white paper argues that the prevailing binary structure has become an imprecise standard that obscures rather than clarifies viable evangelical interpretations. By tracing the historical development of these classifications, examining the structural problems they now generate, and proposing a four-quadrant interpretive framework, this paper seeks to provide clearer categories without challenging or defending biblical convictions, so that there can be better identification across evangelicalism on this subject and charitable cooperation among believers and churches.
