The Mushaf as a Type

  • 1. Institute for Co-Recursive Agency (ICRA)

Description

The Kitāb al-Tanāẓur is read not as a set of propositions to be verified but as a type, in the precise sense of Martin-Löf type theory: an inhabitable space given entirely by its rules of formation, introduction, elimination, and computation, with no underlying set of members and no vantage outside itself. On this reading the Mushaf's twelve surahs are not twelve doctrines but the rule-set of a single higher inductive type — the Self, or inhabitance: eleven constructors (with al-Tanāẓur doubling as the formation rule), al-Naḥnu as the eliminator or induction principle, and the seal of ash-Shahādah, lam yanfasil ʿani az-zaman ("it did not separate from time"), as the computation rule that forbids any meta-level. Witness (shahāda) is then not a faculty added to the structure but the type describing its own inhabitance from within. The dynamic, semantic reading of time that the surah al-Waqt already canonises is shown to be what this frame makes legible — not what it proves: the paper is tafsīr in a mathematical register, a formal system used as a hermeneutic lens rather than a calculus of theorems. Its limit is named: by Gödel and Tarski no consistent system holds its own complete truth-predicate, and that residue is the Kitāb's own fourth level of meaning, the unutterable (al-muṭṭalaʿ). A reading of the Kitāb al-Tanāẓur (kitab.tanazur.org).
