Description
Key Results from the DBFZ Resource Database (DE Biomass Monitor), as of 2 December 2024, together with the static calculation parameters used to derive the results (updated as of 1 June 2026).
Abstract (English)
The German[1] and European[2] bioeconomy strategies set the course for a sustainable, climate-neutral economy based on renewable biological resources. Key elements include the circular economy and the efficient use of biogenic wastes and residues for material and energy applications in order to replace fossil resources. A reliable database on the availability, composition, and utilization potentials of these biogenic wastes and residues is essential for the implementation of this strategy.
Against this background, researchers at the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) have established a continuous biomass monitoring system. Since 2010, this system has systematically assessed biomass potentials in Germany. The data are made available through the publicly accessible web application “DBFZ Resource Database” and its integrated module “DE Biomass Monitor” to enhance transparency and support evidence-based decision-making in science, policy, and practice. The website also provides additional information, including detailed datasets, methodological descriptions, and an application programming interface (API) for integration into external applications.
The present dataset (Version 6.3.2, status: 2 December 2024) represents an extract from the DE Biomass Monitor. It contains results on theoretical, technical, and mobilisable biomass potentials, as well as current biomass use, for a total of 77 biogenic waste and residue streams in Germany. The data are consistently available for the period from 2010 to 2020.
The calculation of biomass potentials is based on a methodological approach that combines dynamic and static calculation elements. Dynamic parameters (e.g., livestock numbers or crop yields) vary over time and are updated annually whenever corresponding data are available, whereas static parameters (e.g., dry matter content or product to residue ratio) are assumed to remain constant throughout the observation period. To enhance transparency and reproducibility, a separate file containing the static calculation parameters used is provided alongside the main dataset.
An overview of the key results shows that the technical biomass potential in 2020 amounted to an average of 110.3 million tonnes of dry matter (tDM) (range: 91.7–128.9 million tDM). On average, the technical biomass potential was distributed across the five sectors considered as follows:
- Forestry by-products: 27.4%
- Industrial residues: 13.9%
- Agricultural residues: 24.7%
- Residues from other areas: 3.4%
- Municipal waste and sewage sludge: 30.6%
The mobilisable potential for 2020 amounted to an average of 28.8 million tDM (range: 15.7–41.8 million tDM) and was distributed across the five sectors as follows:
- Forestry by-products: 23.0%
- Industrial residues: 0%
- Agricultural residues: 46.6%
- Residues from other areas: 5.1%
- Municipal waste and sewage sludge: 25.3%
This dataset contributes to improved data transparency and comparability in the field of the bioeconomy and provides a robust basis for further analyses, modelling activities, and policy decision-making processes.
