The Ledger: Records, Seals, Winding, and the Cost of Recovery

Description
This paper gives an accounting vocabulary for trace-bearing records: measurements, marks, stored states, trajectories, and mathematical encodings whose past arrangement must be reconstructed through a channel. It introduces no new physical law. Count is the total tracked by a conservation law, counting rule, or declared ledger. Order is the recoverable arrangement of that count. Sequence is the exact succession by which the arrangement came to be, usually the most fragile part. The central object is a Seal: a condition under which recovering a past arrangement becomes unavailable, discontinuous, aliased, or unstable under the channels the system supplies.
The key bridge is this: a closed trajectory can erase turn-history from position; winding restores that history; sampling decides whether the winding is preserved, hidden, or aliased. In complex analysis this appears as the logarithm, monodromy, and the argument principle. In signal processing it appears as continuous observation, undersampling, smoothing, and a single snapshot. In physical substrates it appears as retention, erasure, and instrument visibility. The contribution is not a proof that these domains share one mechanism, but a careful accounting language for asking, of any record, what survived, which channel carried it, what rate measured its loss, and whether the proposed path back actually exists.
