NESTLER - Drought Prediction Dataset

Description

This dataset was created under NESTLER (oNe hEalth SusTainabiLity partnership between EU-AFRICA for food sEcuRity) Horizon Research Project, Funded by the European Union under Grant Agreement no.101060762.

Description:

This dataset is a time-series record of daily meteorological measurements. It spans from January 1, 1983, to October 31, 2023, covering 40 years of daily data. The aim of the dataset is to perform drought prediction.

The dataset is structured with a clear time component (YEAR, MO, DY) and contains a wide array of atmospheric and surface variables.

Data of four different African countries are contained into the dataset, specifically for Cameroon, Ethiopia,  Rwanda and Nigeria. For each African country several locations (towns and communities) are included to increase the spacial variability of the dataset.

Two csv files correspond to each location, a csv containing the environmental features and the other csv file contains the SPEI (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index) drought index, which is a multivariate climatic index that is used for detecting, monitoring and analyzing the volume and the duration of drought.

Also, another csv file is included with the exact coordinates of each location used for each African country.

More specifically, the features contained at each _clean.csv file are the following:

  • YEAR: the year of the observation
  • MO: the mothe of the observation
  • DY: the day of the observation
  • QV2M: specific humidity at 2 meters
  • PRECTOTTCORR: corrected total precipitation
  • T2M: temperature at 2 meters
  • T2MDEW: dew point temperature at 2 meters
  • T2MWET: wet bulb temperature at 2 meters
  • TS: skin temperature
  • T2M_RANGE: daily temperature range at 2 meters
  • T2M_MAX: daily maximum temperature at 2 meters
  • T2M_MIN: daily minimum temperature at 2 meters
  • PS: surface pressure
  • WS10M: average daily wind speed at 10 meters
  • WS10M_MAX: daily maximum wind speed at 10 meters
  • WS10M_MIN: daily minimum wind speed at 10 meters
  • WS10M_RANGE: the difference WS10M_MAX - WS10M_MIN
  • WS50M: average daily wind speed at 50 meters
  • WS50M_MAX: the maximum wind speed at 50 meters
  • WS50M_MIN: the minimum wind speed at 50 meters
  • WS50M_RANGE: the difference WS50M_MAX - WS50M_MIN
