ORIGIN AND ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF GOSSYPIUM SPECIES

Abstract: The genus Gossypium comprises the world's most important natural 
fiber crops. This paper explores the origin and economic significance of four primary 
cultivated Gossypium species, including diploid and allotetraploid cottons. 
Gossypium hirsutum (Upland cotton) accounts for 95% of global cotton fiber 
production, while Gossypium barbadense (Pima cotton) is notable for its superior 
fiber quality. The domestication and genetic evolution of these species are discussed, 
along with their genomic characteristics, fiber development mechanisms, and the 
impact of artificial selection on genetic diversity. Additionally, the conservation of 
wild relatives is highlighted as a crucial resource for breeding and biodiversity.
