Is the Left/Right Political Classification Valid? A Structural Critique Through the Lens of a Three-Dimensional Cognitive Framework

The left/right political spectrum has been the dominant framework for classifying political actors for over two centuries.

This paper argues that this binary classification is not merely imprecise, but structurally invalid — analogous to the pre-Copernican assumption that the Sun revolves around the Earth.Through five illustrative case studies drawn from contemporary politics (Japan, the United States, China, and Russia), the paper demonstrates three recurring failure patterns of the left/right label system. As an alternative lens, it references a three-dimensional cognitive framework (the "3D Personality Plotter") in which political behavior is analyzed across three orthogonal axes: Stance (X), Motivation (Y), and Anchor (Z).

The paper concludes that the left/right classification conflates these three independent dimensions into a single axis, producing systematic misreadings of political reality.

Abstract (Japanese)

左派/右派という政治的スペクトラムは、200年以上にわたって政治的アクターを分類する支配的なフレームワークであり続けてきた。

本稿は、この二項対立的分類が単に不正確であるのみならず、構造的に無効であると主張する——それはちょうど、太陽が地球の周りを回るというコペルニクス以前の仮定と同様の構造的誤りである。日本・米国・中国・ロシアの現代政治から5つの例示的事例を通じて、左派/右派ラベルが機能不全を起こす3つの反復パターンを示す。代替的な視点として、政治的行動をスタンス(X軸)・動機(Y軸)・立脚点(Z軸)の3つの直交軸で分析する三次元認知フレームワーク(「3D性格プロッター」)を参照する。

本稿は、左派/右派分類がこれら3つの独立した次元を単一の軸に圧縮することで、政治的現実の体系的な誤読を生み出していると結論づける。

追記(2026/07/02): 本稿の公開後、著者は本稿で提示した三軸フレームワーク(Stance/Motivation/Anchor)について、より実証的に検証され広く用いられている性格特性モデルであるビッグファイブ(五因子モデル)との関係の観点から、再検討を進めています。この再検討は、本稿の中心的主張——すなわち、複数の独立した次元を単一の左右軸に圧縮することが体系的な歪みを生む、という主張——を否定するものではなく、測定の正確性と実用性という観点から動機づけられたものです。著者は本稿を撤回する意図はなく、同様の批判をより適切に展開できる枠組みとして、五次元モデルの可能性を検討している段階です。今後の検討結果は、本稿と関連付けた別記録として公開する予定です。

Note added 2026/07/02: The three-axis framework (Stance, Motivation, Anchor) underlying this analysis is currently being reconsidered by the author in relation to the Five-Factor Model (Big Five) of personality; see https://zenodo.org/records/20839885 for details. This reconsideration concerns the specific axes used, not the central argument of this paper — that collapsing multiple independent dimensions into a single left/right axis produces systematic distortion — which is expected to hold regardless of whether three or five dimensions are used.
