Description

Abstract (English)

Article type: Original Research Article

Objectives: To analyze the implementation of recommendations to promote the initiation of breastfeeding from a Best Practice Guideline in the hospital setting and to evaluate the impact on breastfeeding by describing the results obtained over a one-year period.

Methodology: A prospective longitudinal observational descriptive study was conducted over one year, analyzing process and outcome indicators related to the promotion of early initiation of breastfeeding from birth to the first hour of life, or when the mother–infant dyad was clinically stable. The sample consisted of 360 mothers and their newborns. Data were recorded in the computing platform and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Results:Eighty percent of women reported their intention to breastfeed, and 94% had skin-to-skin contact, which occurred immediately after birth in 87% of cases and lasted more than one hour in 85% of cases. Eighty percent of mothers initiated breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, and 78% maintained exclusive breastfeeding during the first 24 hours. Seventy-seven percent continued breastfeeding at the time of hospital discharge.

Conclusions:The implementation of the guideline improved skin-to-skin contact, early initiation, and continuation of breastfeeding at hospital discharge. Evidence-based practices proved effective. It is recommended to maintain their sustainability and to expand future multicentre evaluations with follow-up.
