Out-of-Sample Bat and Painted Turtle Comet Assay Images for COMPASS Evaluation
Authors/Creators
Description
COMPASS Bat and Painted Turtle Comet Assay Dataset
This dataset contains independently collected comet assay microscopy images from big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and painted turtles (Chrysemys picta), together with associated OpenComet outputs and measurement files where available. The dataset was used to support evaluation of COMPASS: Comet Object Measurement Pipeline with Automated Selection and Scoring.
The archive includes images from baseline, DNA damage, and DNA damage plus repair conditions. In the COMPASS manuscript, 20 images from this archive were analyzed: 15 images were used for out-of-sample detection and automated selection validation, and 5 additional painted turtle images were used for measurement agreement analysis against OpenComet. The archive contains additional images beyond those analyzed in the manuscript to support reproducibility and future benchmarking.
File structure
Painted turtles
The painted turtle images are divided across four experimental collections:
3.8.11_113.8.12_113,8,12-310-8,11
The 3.8.11_11 and 3.8.12_11 directories contain raw microscopy images together with corresponding OpenComet output images and spreadsheets containing OpenComet measurements.
The 3,8,12-3 and 10-8,11 directories are organized into separate Baseline, Damage, and Repair folders containing raw microscopy images. Each also includes an OCout directory that mirrors this structure and contains the corresponding OpenComet output images and measurement spreadsheets.
Bats
The bat dataset contains a spreadsheet aggregating OpenComet measurements together with separate Baseline, Damage, and Repair directories.
Within each experimental condition, images are organized by individual sample and contain three subdirectories:
Picture Input– raw microscopy imagesPicture Edited– laboratory contrast-enhanced images used for OpenComet analysisPicture Output– OpenComet output images
For the COMPASS study, COMPASS was evaluated using raw input images together with its own preprocessing pipeline, whereas OpenComet was evaluated using the laboratory-provided OpenComet outputs and measurement files. This dataset is provided to facilitate reproducibility, comparison with existing comet assay analysis software, and future development of automated comet detection, selection, and measurement methods.
