Unravelling the Psychological Sequelae of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Body Image Dissatisfaction as a Mediator of Inferiority Complex and Jealousy
Authors/Creators
Description
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is not only a complex endocrine condition but also a profound psychosocial challenge, often accompanied by emotional distress and relational difficulties. This research sought to unravel the psychological sequelae of PCOS by examining body image dissatisfaction as a mediator of inferiority complex and jealousy. Using a cross-sectional design with standardized psychometric measures, the study revealed that body image dissatisfaction significantly mediated the relationship between PCOS and inferiority complex (β = .42, p < .01), highlighting its central role in shaping negative self-perceptions. The mediation effect on jealousy was weaker but statistically significant (β = .19, p < .05), suggesting that jealousy may be influenced by additional relational or contextual factors beyond body image concerns. These results underscore the importance of considering psychological dimensions alongside clinical management of PCOS, as body image dissatisfaction emerged as a pivotal mechanism linking physical symptoms to emotional distress. The findings call for integrative biopsychosocial interventions that address both the physiological and psychological burdens of PCOS, while future research should adopt longitudinal and cross-cultural approaches to capture the dynamic and culturally contingent nature of body image dissatisfaction. By situating body image dissatisfaction at the intersection of physical health and psychological well-being, this study contributes to a more holistic understanding of PCOS and its impact on women’s lives (Rodgers et al., 2020; Teede et al., 2018).
