Workstream Continuity Design: Design Bible

Authors/Creators

Description

Workstream Continuity Design (WCD) is a proposed HCI and product-design discipline for software that must help people leave, return to, understand, supervise, and safely resume concurrent human and AI workstreams without reconstructing the operating context from scratch.

This research-edition design bible defines workstream continuity as a product-level quality attribute and Workstream Continuity Design as the coordinating practice of designing for that attribute. It develops a five-commitment framework, category boundaries, cognitive and supervisory-control lineage, a canonical information architecture, durable work-thread and actor-and-agency models, a re-entry protocol, an attention model, a pattern library, visual and interaction guidance, human-oversight and safety architecture, an anti-pattern catalog, metrics and conformance tests, a maturity model, and an applied AI-first CRM case study.

The report also proposes an accountable expression profile for operated AI agents: a minimum operator-facing semantic envelope in which consequential machine expressions are typed, supported by evidence and provenance, bounded in consequence, resolved against authority, linked to durable workstreams, and paired with human-intervention paths. The profile is positioned as an application-layer synthesis over existing agent-communication, provenance, event, and observability standards rather than as a replacement transport protocol.

Epistemic status: the human-factors premises are grounded in established research. The category terminology, architecture, pattern library, metrics, maturity model, and accountable-expression profile are original synthesis and proposals requiring implementation and empirical validation. This version is a non-peer-reviewed research edition intended for product designers, HCI researchers, agent-platform teams, enterprise UX architects, and engineers building operational AI systems.
