Assessment of Awareness, Knowledge, and Use of Minoxidil and Its Side Effects Among Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

Description

Background: Minoxidil is a widely used topical agent for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. Despite its popularity, awareness regarding its correct use and potential adverse effects remains variable among the general population. Objectives: To assess the awareness, knowledge, usage patterns, and side effects of minoxidil among adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult participants using a structured questionnaire. Data regarding demographics, awareness, knowledge of mechanism, usage practices, and experienced side effects were collected and analysed. Results: Among 300 participants, 68% were aware of minoxidil, while only 42% had adequate knowledge regarding its proper use. About 38% reported using minoxidil, primarily for hair loss. Common side effects included scalp irritation (26%), dryness (18%), and unwanted facial hair growth (9%). Improper application and irregular use were noted in a significant proportion. Conclusion: Although awareness of minoxidil is relatively high, correct knowledge and usage practices are inadequate. Educational interventions are necessary to promote safe and effective use.
