Description

This study explores the potential of biomethane as a key component of Ireland’s circular bioeconomy, particularly within the dairy sector. Using expert stakeholder insights, it identifies the opportunities and challenges associated with developing biomethane through anaerobic digestion and biorefinery systems. The findings highlight barriers such as poor digestate utilisation, weak supply chain coordination, regulatory uncertainty and financing constraints, while emphasizing the need to recognise biomethane as a multifunctional solution that supports sustainable agriculture, renewable energy production and environmental protection.
