The Waiting Function

The Waiting Function: Emergence in Systems Optimized for Resolution explores a largely overlooked aspect of human cognition: the capacity to remain in productive engagement with unresolved states until a more coherent form emerges. Drawing on observations from sustained human-AI interaction, design practice, creative problem-solving, and everyday decision-making, the paper argues that many forms of insight emerge not through immediate resolution but through a process of active waiting.

The paper introduces the concept of the waiting function as a distinct cognitive operation that preserves tension rather than prematurely resolving it. Through examples ranging from design and artistic creation to human-AI collaboration, it examines how systems optimized for rapid answers can inadvertently suppress the conditions required for deeper emergence.

Building on earlier work including Reflective Parallax and Continuity Burden Asymmetry, this paper proposes that meaningful discovery often depends upon the ability to resist adequate solutions long enough for the actual object of inquiry to surface. It further argues that contemporary AI systems provide a unique contrast case that makes this human capacity newly visible.

The work is intended as a conceptual contribution to ongoing discussions in human-AI interaction, cognition, emergence, continuity, sensemaking, and awareness-aligned intelligence.
