Description

English title: Six Decades of Work of the National Museum in Čačak (1952–2012)

The chapter “Six Decades of Work of the National Museum in Čačak (1952–2012)” analyzes the institutional, cultural and political development of the National Museum in Čačak during the first sixty years of its existence. It covers the period from the museum’s foundation in 1952 to the commemoration of its anniversary in 2012, interpreting the museum as an institution that preserved cultural heritage, produced knowledge about the past and participated in shaping the public history of the local community.

The chapter follows the transformation of the museum from an institution created within the ideological and cultural-political framework of socialist Yugoslavia into a complex cultural actor in the post-socialist period. It analyzes changes in organizational structure, professional work, exhibition programs, collecting strategies, development of collections, research activity, publications and relations with the public.

Special attention is devoted to the museum’s role in the socialist period. Like other cultural institutions, the National Museum in Čačak had the task of developing professional work, educating the public, preserving material culture and participating in the construction of ideologically acceptable representations of the past. The museum was part of a broader system of cultural policy, while gradually developing professional standards and scholarly autonomy.

The chapter shows that archaeology, history, ethnography and art history functioned within the museum as professional disciplines, but also as forms of public representation of local and national heritage. Exhibitions, publications, collections and educational work were not only the result of professional activity, but also forms of cultural communication with the town, the region and the wider public.

In the post-socialist period, the museum faced new challenges: changes in cultural policy, financial constraints, the altered social status of cultural institutions, new approaches to heritage and the need to shape public history in a different political and cultural environment. The work of the National Museum in Čačak thus represents an example of the long duration of an institution that had to adapt to different social systems while preserving its basic function: research, protection, interpretation and public presentation of cultural heritage.

The significance of this chapter lies in the fact that it does not present the history of a regional museum merely as an institutional chronicle, but as a study of cultural policy, modernization, public memory and the relationship between local heritage, national identity and museum practice in Serbia from the second half of the twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century.
