Vedaji Bhaskar Pant
Authors/Creators
Description
This public biographical note discusses Vedaji Bhaskar Pant, also spelled Vedoji Pant or Vedaji Bhaskar Rao Pant, a seventeenth-century Maratha Brahmin commander-administrator associated with Shahaji Bhonsle, the Bijapur Sultanate, the Arni Jagir, Mysore, Srirangapatna, Gingee/Jinji/Jengi, and the later transition to Shivaji’s southern Maratha expansion. The essay combines Arni family and community tradition, A. Vadivelu’s account of the Arni Jagir, C. Hayavadana Rao’s History of Mysore, University of Mysore doctoral theses on Mysore-Maratha and Mysore-Tamil country relations, and modern reference material on Gingee Fort and the Maratha Military Landscapes of India. An appendix uses an Arthashastra-style interpretive framework to place Vedaji’s career within the layered political order of the Deccan and South India, c. 1635–1667.
