Description
English title: “Come and Drink Serbian Blood, You Anglo-American Hyenas!”: The Allied Bombing of Serbia 1943–1944 and the Propaganda of the Collaborationist Press
This article analyzes Allied bombing of Serbian cities in 1943–1944 through the lens of collaborationist propaganda in occupied Serbia. Focusing on the press discourse controlled by the government of Milan Nedić, the study examines how civilian casualties and urban destruction were instrumentalized to construct a strongly anti-Western narrative, while deliberately obscuring the dominant role of American air forces in the bombing campaigns.
Using archival sources, contemporary newspapers, and comparative analysis, the article reconstructs the propaganda model that selectively framed Britain as the primary aggressor, minimized or erased American responsibility, and mobilized emotional imagery of civilian suffering to delegitimize both the Western Allies and domestic “Anglophile” actors. Special attention is paid to key moments such as the bombings of Niš and Belgrade and to the role of leading propagandists, particularly Stanislav Krakov.
The study situates bombing propaganda within broader strategies of political legitimation, moral mobilization, and collaborationist ideology, contributing to research on wartime propaganda, political culture, and the manipulation of public perception in Southeast Europe during the Second World War. The article complements the author’s monographic work on Allied air operations and propaganda by providing a focused case study of media discourse and symbolic violence.
