Description
This paper presents a preliminary observational comparison between Northern Korean Mindung Ssireum and traditional Buryat wrestling. The analysis focuses on match initiation, gripping behavior, clinch formation, and throwing mechanics. Video observations suggest that both traditions share a similar competitive structure characterized by free approach, dynamic clinch formation, and minimal reliance on fixed belt grips. These features distinguish them from modern Korean Ssireum and Okinawan Shima wrestling, where competitors begin the match with pre-established grips.
