Inspirational Motivation and Performance of Trade Unions in Kenya
Description
Trade unions were established to protect the working life of workers. Currently, they are facing various challenges, which are weakening the unions. Some of the problems being faced by trade unions in Kenya are associated with the leadership style adopted by the unions. Therefore, transformational leadership is critical for the successful performance of trade unions, as it enables them to achieve their goals. The study was guided to examine the influence of inspirational motivation on the performance of trade unions in Kenya. The study was anchored in Transformational Leadership Theory. It adopted a mixed research design (descriptive and correlational research designs) and was anchored in positivism philosophy. The Slovin's sample size determination formula was used to arrive at a sample size of 400 used during the research study. To draw conclusions on the relationship among the variables, the study tested the hypotheses using regression models at a 0.05 level of significance. The study concludes that inspirational motivation has a significant positive impact on the performance of trade unions in Kenya, emphasizing the importance of transformational leadership. The rejection of the null hypothesis highlights the need for leadership practices that inspire and motivate union members to improve satisfaction, engagement, and overall performance. To achieve this, Kenyan trade unions should adopt leadership strategies that emphasize clear communication, a compelling vision, and fostering collective commitment. By promoting a shared vision and instilling enthusiasm about future prospects, unions can enhance service delivery, rebuild trust, and strengthen their advocacy for workers' rights. The findings imply that adopting transformational leadership practices, particularly inspirational motivation, can significantly enhance the performance, relevance, and advocacy effectiveness of trade unions in Kenya.
