The dispersal of a haploporid by aquatic vegetation rafts could have been achieved by the first intermediate host being carried out on the raft, by the final host using the raft for shelter over the open ocean, or by as the second intermediate host itself since haploporid cercariae typically encyst on aquatic vegetation. Collection of potential hosts from the west coast of Africa and the Atlantic volcanic islands, such as the Cape Verde Islands, Ascension Island and St. Helena, may help discern if additional closely related species of Forticulcita occur there and if rafting is a viable explanation. Clearly, molecular data from additional species of Forticulcita, in particular the type-species, F. glabra, are needed to help understand the pattern of radiation within the subfamily.
