Water Distribution Network Optimization
Authors/Creators
Description
Water distribution networks are critical infrastructure systems responsible for delivering safe and reliable water supply to residential, commercial, industrial, and public users. Rapid urbanization, population growth, climate variability, aging infrastructure, increasing water demand, and operational inefficiencies have created major challenges in the planning and management of water distribution systems worldwide. Traditional water supply networks often experience issues such as high energy consumption, water losses, pressure imbalance, leakage, poor water quality, and inadequate operational efficiency. Water distribution network optimization has emerged as an advanced engineering approach aimed at improving hydraulic performance, reducing operational costs, minimizing water losses, enhancing reliability, and supporting sustainable water management. This article presents a comprehensive review of water distribution network optimization, including hydraulic modeling, pressure management, leakage control, pump scheduling, energy optimization, smart monitoring systems, and artificial intelligence applications. The study examines optimization techniques, computational methods, sustainable infrastructure strategies, and digital technologies used in modern water distribution systems. The findings indicate that optimized water distribution networks significantly improve water supply reliability, energy efficiency, operational sustainability, and infrastructure resilience. The article also discusses implementation challenges, technological advancements, and future trends in intelligent water distribution management systems.
