The Societal Impact of Gambling on Over-Indebtedness

Worldwide, an increasing number of adults (~449 million)
engage in risky gambling behavior or even have a gambling
disorder that requires treatment (80 million). Reports are
coming from many EU member states that private over-indebtedness
is increasing due to gambling. Therefore, ECDN
held a conference on the topic at the European Parliament in
Strasbourg in April 2026. Experts from ten European countries
presented research results, prevention, and therapy
approaches, which are published in this issue.
