Suffiziente Wohnkultur (SuWoKu) - Akzeptanz und Strategien einer suffizienten Wohnkultur - Wohnungspolitik für bedürfnisorientiertes, generationengerechtes und umweltverträgliches Wohnen
Description
The project “Suffiziente Wohnkultur (SuWoKu)” examines how needs‑oriented, generation‑appropriate and environmentally compatible living can be promoted within the existing stock of single‑family homes. It starts from the growing housing dilemma: under‑occupied homes after the family phase coincide with housing shortages, rising per‑capita floor area and postponed renovations. The central research gap concerns the conditions under which older single‑family‑home residents are willing to downsize, convert or rent out space, as well as the municipal prerequisites needed to activate these potentials.
Methodologically, the project combines stakeholder interviews, focus groups, a nationwide survey, municipal workshops, and ecological, legal and potential‑based analyses. This approach reveals attitudes, decision logics and realistic alternatives, as well as municipal scopes for action.
The findings show that willingness to change emerges when attractive, accessible alternatives exist and adequate support is available.
SuWoKu identifies which target groups within the single‑family‑home stock can be reached and which conversion, subdivision and rental options appear realistic. This makes visible how housing potentials can be activated and new units created—without sealing additional land.
